Biographical Note	Colonel Reginald Haworth OBE FCA was the Commission's Chief Accountant and Second-in-Command for Central European District, initially at St. Omer, subsequently Arras and, in 1938-39, Wimereux. Reginald Haworth was born on 15 February 1888 in Blackburn, Lancashire. He worked as a chartered accountant before the First World War. During the First World War, he served as a Captain in the King's Liverpool Regiment. Haworth applied by letter for employment at the Imperial War Graves Commission on 8 February 1920. He joined as Chief Accountant on 6 April 1920 and was given the honorary rank of Colonel. Haworth worked under Lt.-Col. Oswald, who had proceeded to the London Headquarters, Carlton House Terrace and had known Haworth during the First World War, having been responsible for his introduction to the IWGC. On 1 October 1927, Haworth was appointed Accountant & Auditor, Central European District before being made Deputy Chief Administrative Officer on 1 February 1938. In 1932, he was awarded the status of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE). Haworth was sent to Ypres in October 1939 to take charge there as Deputy Controller in Belgium, in anticipation of a possible emergency. His account of the evacuation in 1940 during the Second World War appears in 'The Unending Vigil' by Philip Longworth. He was Chief Accountant between 1940 before resigning on 5 September 1945, following a period of ill-health. In 1965, he compiled notes reminiscing of his initial employment by the Commission which are now held in the Archive at Head Office. Reginald Haworth OBE FCA died in Westmorland County Hospital, Kendal on 15 November 1976, aged 88.
