| Biographical Note | Philip Dalton Hepworth FRIBA was a British architect and the Commission's Principal Architect for North-Western Europe after the Second World War.
He was born in 1890. In 1944, Hepworth was appointed the Commission's Principal Architect for North-Western Europe. He designed 46 cemeteries including Arnhem Oosterbeek Cemetery. He also designed the Memorials to the Missing at Bayeux, Dunkirk and Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery. He resigned in 1957.
Outside of his work with the Commission, Hepworth was also responsible for the design of the 49th West Riding Division Memorial at Fontenay-le-Pesnel, Normandy, France, near Rauray.
He died in 1963. A number of perspective drawings were presented by his executor to the Commission and some of these represented cemeteries as they had been constructed. These have been retained in the CWGC's Archive. |
