Description
File of correspondence concerning the grave of Chaplain 4th Class The Rev. John Gwynn, an Irish Jesuit Chaplain who is buried in Bethune Town Cemetery, France. Correspondence concerns a memorial erected to The Rev. John Gwynn, chaplain attached to the 1st Battalion, Irish Guards, expressing the Battalion's gratitude and admiration. Later correspondence from IWGC to family asking for permission to remove the memorial when Bethune Cemetery was re-modelled in 1920 as the memoria was not in keeping with the idea of equality of treatment and was damaged; Correspondence from family stating implacable opposition to removal of the memorial; IWGC negotiation of situation, Seeking support from Irish Guards, Resolution by retaining the recumbent slab and including inscription on the standard headstone.
