DescriptionFIle of correspondence concerning the grave of Major The Hon. Clement B. Ogilvy Freeman-Mitford in Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery, Belgium. Early correspondence with family regarding details about the location of Major Freeman-Mitford's grave and the return of the original wooden cross following the erection of the Commission's headstone. Correspondence in 1922 regarding stained headstone with response from IWGC confirming this was not a disfigurement but a characteristic of the type of stone. Correspondence from the widow in 1940 regarding possible damage to the grave sustained during the Second World War which was followed up in 1955 when it was confirmed, following inspection, that the headstone and cemetery were in good condition. Later correspondence regarding enquiry about the location of Serjeant Colin Blythe's grave (49296, 12th Bn., KOYLI) and the grave of Major Freeman-Mitford.
Content NoteIncludes: Handwritten letter from John Kennedy, on behalf of Major Mitford's relatives, confirming safe receipt of the wooden cross originally erected over the grave, dated 14 February 1922; Handwritten letter from Lady Helen Nutting, widow of Major Mitford, regarding possible war damage to headstone, dated 3 June 1940; Response to Lady Nutting from Frank Tyrrell confirming bomb damage was rectified in 1947 and that all the headstones in Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery were renovated and washed in 1954 and 1955, dated 17 March 1955.
