Description | File of correspondence regarding the grave of Lieutenant Noel George Scott McGrath in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France. Correspondence concerns internal discussion of McGrath's grave, which needed expensive repairs. McGrath, a lieutenant with the 2nd Dragoon Guards, died on 5/11/1914, prior to the decision to prohibit the erection of private memorials by General Routine Order 30 May 1916. The Commission attempted to contact next-of-kin, who had previously recorded their objection to the removal of the private headstone, but letters were returned unopened. As it was impossible to contact the next-of-kin it appears that the Commission went ahead and replaced the private headstone with a CWGC headstone. |
Content Note | Includes: Copy of the original wording on the headstone, designed by McGrath's next of kin, and including the words 'Oldest son of the Hon. Geo McGrath, Charlemont, Ewerton, Jamaica'. These appear to have been removed from the replacement CWGC headstone. Also worth noting that CWGC headstones in this cemetery are 'recumbent' and an internal memo of 28/10/1953 notes rhat the erect private memorials 'will mar the general appearance of the cemetery.' |
