File of correspondence concerning the grave of Driver R. Stacey who is buried in Malbork Commonwealth War Cemetery. Main topics include request from next of kin for the repatriation of Driver Stacey’s remains to England and attempts by the Commission. to locate his grave and details confirming his death. Later correspondence addressed to next of kin (then remarried) concerning the poor condition of the war graves in Gdansk (formerly known as Danzig) Garrison Cemetery noted during an inspection visit by the Commission’s Regional Director of Northern Region in June 1959 and the subsequent decision to transfer all thirteen First World War Commonwealth war graves to Malbork Commonwealth War Cemetery in 1960 to ensure their future maintenance to the required standard.

Includes: Handwritten letter from Driver Stacey’s widow requesting for his remains to be repatriated to England and explaining that Driver Stacey enlisted in August 1914 and served in France before dying in hospital in Danzig, dated 1 Mar 1920. Copy letter of response sent to next of kin confirming that Driver Stacey was buried in Danzig Garrison Cemetery, dated 2 July 1924. Two copies of the same letter dated 12 Jan 1961 addressed to next of kin (under new surname having remarried) explaining the reasons for transferring Driver Stacey’s grave and others into Malbork Commonwealth War Cemetery with accompanying envelope inscribed with a note stating intended recipient not known at the address recorded on the envelope.
