Gunner W G S DOWN - HERBECOURT BRITISH CEMETERY - Royal Field Artillery
Multimedia
Description
Correspondence involving the grave of Gunner W.G.S. Down, including letters from his “sweetheart” Mabel Landsdown. Largely consists of requests for photographs and the family’s request that the personal memorial be kept instead of a IWGC headstone. On the 23rd February 1939, the decision was taken by the Commission to remove and replace this personal memorial as it had fallen into disrepair, after no response was received from the casualty’s next of kin.
Content Note
Includes: Two handwritten letters from Mabel Landsdown to the IWGC, dated 17th October 1917 and 27th July 1919. A message dated 2nd April 1924 from the Secretary of the Enquries branch, containing a description of Gnr. W.G.S. Down's personal memorial and its origins (apparently carved by war comrades).
