Description
Correspondence from next-of-kin enquiring into the possibility of having a permanent memorial erected in lieu of the wooden cross marker with response from Graves Registration Commission. Further request from next-of-kin for a photograph of Spence’s grave; later correspondence with next-of-kin regarding placement of floral tribute on Spence’s grave and the placement of a private memorial over the grave. Correspondence regarding the stone memorial erected over the grave and its removal for replacement with a Commission headstone, with correction of personal information supplied by next-of-kin. Correspondence regarding delivery of the original stone memorial sent to the next-of-kin as requested. Letter from Spence’s sister notifying of her father’s death and requesting a wreath to be placed on Spences grave on the anniversary of his death, dated 26 April 1940, with response from the Commission explaining this was not possible owing to the military situation at the time. Correspondence assuring Spence’s sister that Lieutenant Spence’s grave was not damaged during the Second World War and providing information on the burial location of her nephew Major J.A.P. Landon in Kohima War Cemetery.
