Report of visit by Princess Marie Louise and Sir Percival Marling to Gallipoli. Report on unveiling of the R.101 Memorial in Beauvais, and other ceremonies at other locations. Numbers of visitors signing the Visitors’ Books in France and Belgium in September 1933 were 8,008 at the Memorials and 6,913 at the Cemeteries. Enquiries about the condition of German war graves in England were being sent to the cemeteries direct. The Commission had arranged with the German Embassy the correct channel, which is through the Commission. Letter of thanks received from the French Old Comrades Association in connection with the tablet to the workman killed at Vis-en-Artois. British Legion had asked for a party of gardeners to take part in the ceremony at the Albert Hall. Wreath made from flowers from the French Cemeteries to be laid in Westminster Abbey on Armistice Day.
Report Of The 225th Meeting Of The Finance Committee Under discussion were the following points: necessary work at the Cemeteries in Germany; ground work at the Somme Memorial; and adjustments due to the continuation of exchange relief.
Report Of The 20th Meeting Of The Staff Committee The meeting was reminded of the earlier discussions about the emoluments and conditions of service of Commission staff in Belgium. The Staff Committee felt they couldn’t allow general discussions of this sort. Colonel Oswald agreed to look into the Superannuation Scheme following the long-term illness of gardener Mr Holcomb. Some adjustment to the rules of the scheme might be necessary for men permanently disabled and unable to continue working.
Employment of Gardeners’ Sons In France The subject of the employment of gardeners’ sons was discussed. Colonel Oswald had had discussions with the Director of Kew Gardens and the proposals were presented to the meeting.
Anglo-Belgian Mixed Committee Thanks were expressed to Lord Granville on his retirement from the Anglo-Belgian Mixed Committee and Mr G.W. Klerck was approved to succeed Mr Webster from the same committee.
