Report Of The 215th Meeting Of The Finance Committee Mentions the French Government was paying half the cost of construction of the joint cemetery at Thiepval. Due to Colonel Oswald’s work on the payment of Exchange Relief it was likely that the yearly estimates would be met. It had been authorised for five female typists to be appointed to the Permanent Maintenance Staff. The remainder would be transferred to the Civil Service
[The following section was crossed out, as if redacted] It was stated that the normal employment agreements were for staff to leave at the age of 60, although the Commission had the power to terminate the agreement earlier with six months notice. During recent times of financial difficulty it had been necessary to end the appointment of, among others, Major Ingpen. Major Ingpen had been a most valued member of staff and was a special case of hardship. The Committee asked the Commission to agree to a special settlement with him. The Commission approved this request.
Following a question from Mr. Klerck about gratuities granted to male clerks on being transferred to the Civil Service, Colonel Oswald explained that a gratuity based on length of service was given to people leaving except for those going to permanent pensionable posts in the Civil Service. However, in this instance the gratuity was for their temporary service which was in line with those staff of regular Government departments moving from temporary to permanent positions. The likely cost for the sixteen people involved was about £720.
Headstones For German Graves In The United Kingdom Mention that the Vice-Chairman announced that he had arranged a meeting with representatives of the German Embassy to discuss the unacceptable state of the concrete blocks which were marking German graves. They would be invited to make suggestions to remedy the situation.
Ceremony At The Gallipoli Peninsula Report that Sir George Clerk had now suggested that a dedication ceremony on the Gallipoli Peninsula could now be held.
Staff of the Commission Several terminations were announced. The departure of Major H. Le M. Fellowes was particularly noted, and a formal record of thanks for his work was agreed.
Rolls of Honour Report that the Canadian General Post Office had prohibited the handling of ‘rolls of honour’ from unofficial agencies. The meeting was told that the General Post Office was unable to take similar action in the United Kingdom.
Treaty with ‘Iraq Government A draft agreement with the Iraq Government was presented, and it was proposed that, following the terms of the Charter, it should be presented to the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs for approval.
